NFL Draft and the Pacific – Draft Day 1

April 22, 2010

Tyson Alualu - First Pacific Islander drafted in 2010

I know baseball is “America’s Pastime”, but that is dated and more of a euphemism than anything.  (American) Football is the number one sport in the United States and its popularity has reached some parts of the Pacific.  Need evidence?  Look no further than the NFL.   According to the 2009 Racial and Gender Report Card the NFL had 45 Pacific Islander players. So en lieu of this year’s NFL Draft, I am doing a live update, but with a twist – I’m going to list only Pacific Islander players drafted and Detroit Lions drafted.  Why the Lion’s? Because their official colors are Silver and Honolulu Blue.

NFL Draft – 1st Round

2nd Pick – Honolulu Blue – N’damukong Suh*, DT (Nebraska)

10th Pick – Jaguars – Tyson Alualu, DE (California) born in Honolulu, HI

17th Pick – 49ers – Mike Iupati, OG (Idaho) born in American Samoa

30th Pick – Honolulu Blue Jahvid Best* , RB (California)

* Not Pacific Islander
